In the Hebrew Bible, God appears to Jacob on several occasions. The most well-known of these is the story of Jacob's ladder, which is recorded in Genesis 28. In this story, Jacob has a dream in which he sees a ladder that extends from the earth to heaven, and angels are ascending and descending on it. God appears to Jacob in the dream, saying, "I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring."

Another notable appearance of God to Jacob is recorded in Genesis 32, when Jacob is on his way to meet his estranged brother, Esau. As he is traveling, Jacob is confronted by a mysterious figure who wrestles with him until the break of dawn. After the wrestling match, the figure reveals himself to be God, and blesses Jacob, saying, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome."

There are also several other instances in the Hebrew Bible where God appears to Jacob, such as when he is called to leave his homeland and go to Egypt (Genesis 46:2-4), and when he is preparing to reunite with his son, Joseph (Genesis 46:29).
