Job 14:1-22 - Job Continues To Argue His Case With God
1 "Man, who is born of woman, Is short-lived and full of turmoil. 2 "Like a flower he comes forth and withers He also flees like a shadow and does not remain. 3 "You also open Your eyes on him And bring him into judgment with Yourself. 4 "Who can make the clean out of the unclean? No one! 5 "Since his days are determined, The number of his months is with You; And his limits You have set so that he cannot pass. 6 "Turn Your gaze from him that he may rest, Until he fulfills his day like a hired man.
7 "For there is hope for a tree, When it is cut down, that it will sprout again, And its shoots will not fail. 8 "Though its roots grow old in the ground And its stump dies in the dry soil, 9 At the scent of water it will flourish And put forth sprigs like a plant. 10 "But man dies and lies prostrate Man expires, and where is he? 11 "As water evaporates from the sea, And a river becomes parched and dried up, 12 So man lies down and does not rise. Until the heavens are no longer, He will not awake nor be aroused out of his sleep.
13 "Oh that You would hide me in Sheol, That You would conceal me until Your wrath returns to You, That You would set a limit for me and remember me! 14 "If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my struggle I will wait Until my change comes. 15 "You will call, and I will answer You; You will long for the work of Your hands. 16 "For now You number my steps, You do not observe my sin. 17 "My transgression is sealed up in a bag, And You wrap up my iniquity.
18 "But the falling mountain crumbles away, And the rock moves from its place; 19 Water wears away stones, Its torrents wash away the dust of the earth; So You destroy man's hope. 20 "You forever overpower him and he departs; You change his appearance and send him away. 21 "His sons achieve honor, but he does not know it; Or they become insignificant, but he does not perceive it. 22 "But his body pains him, And he mourns only for himself."

Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
but put to death the Prince of life, the one whom God raised from the dead, a fact to which we are witnesses.
nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things;
1 Samuel 2:6
"The LORD kills and makes alive; He brings down to Sheol and raises up.
"The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother's womb.
but you have exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of His house before you, and you and your nobles, your wives and your concubines have been drinking wine from them; and you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which do not see, hear or understand But the God in whose hand are your life-breath and all your ways, you have not glorified.
for in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, 'For we also are His children.'
Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that."
"LORD, make me to know my end And what is the extent of my days; Let me know how transient I am.
Isaac said, "Behold now, I am old and I do not know the day of my death.
Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit." Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.
"So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.
Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
"Surely I will require your lifeblood; from every beast I will require it. And from every man, from every man's brother I will require the life of man. "Whoever sheds man's blood, By man his blood shall be shed, For in the image of God He made man.
No man can by any means redeem his brother Or give to God a ransom for him-- For the redemption of his soul is costly, And he should cease trying forever-- That he should live on eternally, That he should not undergo decay.
I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.
"For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
"For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself?
in that I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, that you may live and multiply, and that the LORD your God may bless you in the land where you are entering to possess it.
Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
For You are my hope; O Lord GOD, You are my confidence from my youth. By You I have been sustained from my birth; You are He who took me from my mother's womb; My praise is continually of You.
I know, O LORD, that a man's way is not in himself, Nor is it in a man who walks to direct his steps.
He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God?
"He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it.
For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
As for the days of our life, they contain seventy years, Or if due to strength, eighty years, Yet their pride is but labor and sorrow; For soon it is gone and we fly away.
2 Corinthians 5:1
For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
But man in his pomp will not endure; He is like the beasts that perish.
As for man, his days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. When the wind has passed over it, it is no more, And its place acknowledges it no longer.
"Like a shepherd's tent my dwelling is pulled up and removed from me; As a weaver I rolled up my life He cuts me off from the loom; From day until night You make an end of me.
2 Peter 1:13-14
I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder, knowing that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.
1 Chronicles 29:15
"For we are sojourners before You, and tenants, as all our fathers were; our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no hope.
"Man, who is born of woman, Is short-lived and full of turmoil.
Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.
"My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, And come to an end without hope. "Remember that my life is but breath; My eye will not again see good.
"For we are only of yesterday and know nothing, Because our days on earth are as a shadow.
"Now my days are swifter than a runner; They flee away, they see no good.
"Like a flower he comes forth and withers He also flees like a shadow and does not remain.
"LORD, make me to know my end And what is the extent of my days; Let me know how transient I am. "Behold, You have made my days as handbreadths, And my lifetime as nothing in Your sight; Surely every man at his best is a mere breath. Selah. "Surely every man walks about as a phantom; Surely they make an uproar for nothing; He amasses riches and does not know who will gather them.
Remember what my span of life is; For what vanity You have created all the sons of men!
So teach us to number our days, That we may present to You a heart of wisdom.
My days are like a lengthened shadow, And I wither away like grass.
Man is like a mere breath; His days are like a passing shadow.
A voice says, "Call out." Then he answered, "What shall I call out?" All flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, When the breath of the LORD blows upon it; Surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned--
but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die."
1 Corinthians 15:22
For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.
When Adam had lived one hundred and thirty years, he became the father of a son in his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth. Then the days of Adam after he became the father of Seth were eight hundred years, and he had other sons and daughters. So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years, and he died.read more.
So all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years, and he died.
These are the records of the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old, and became the father of Arpachshad two years after the flood; and Shem lived five hundred years after he became the father of Arpachshad, and he had other sons and daughters. Arpachshad lived thirty-five years, and became the father of Shelah;read more.
Long life is in her right hand; In her left hand are riches and honor.
"Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you.
'Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well with you on the land which the LORD your God gives you.
"But you shall serve the LORD your God, and He will bless your bread and your water; and I will remove sickness from your midst. "There shall be no one miscarrying or barren in your land; I will fulfill the number of your days.
1 Kings 3:14
"If you walk in My ways, keeping My statutes and commandments, as your father David walked, then I will prolong your days."
"You will come to the grave in full vigor, Like the stacking of grain in its season.
For length of days and years of life And peace they will add to you.
For by me your days will be multiplied, And years of life will be added to you.
The fear of the LORD prolongs life, But the years of the wicked will be shortened.
1 Peter 3:10
For, "THE ONE WHO DESIRES LIFE, TO LOVE AND SEE GOOD DAYS, MUST KEEP HIS TONGUE FROM EVIL AND HIS LIPS FROM SPEAKING DECEIT.
Who is the man who desires life And loves length of days that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil And your lips from speaking deceit.
"He will yet fill your mouth with laughter And your lips with shouting.
"With a long life I will satisfy him And let him see My salvation."
"I waste away; I will not live forever Leave me alone, for my days are but a breath.
